The Goldilocks Zone
As you may recall I often say I have one rule “the Goldilocks rule.” Rules and massage? eh what?
You probably know about the story, the young girl breaks into an empty house in the woods and searches the house for items that are just right for her. - not too hot, not too cold, not too soft not too hard.
It is about finding the right balance for you.
When it comes to massage this rule is here to empower you. You need to feel safe and listened too. The wrong massage pressure is one of the key complaints in a massage, so we discuss this all before and you are always in control. I can usually feel when the pressure is right for you, and people describe good and bad pain. But I remind you:
If the pressure is too much or not enough please let me know.
When people ask for a deep tissue massage what they may mean is please I don’t want a body polish, or they think no pain no gain. More on this is a later article.
You are in control of the music, the temperature, the pressure, what areas you are sensitive to being touched, the smell of the massage balm ect.
Our nervous system is about balance, the sympathetic nervous system gets a bad rap, but it is not all bad, it helps us get things done. It is often called the day nerve. The other side of the equation is the parasympathetic nervous system, called the night nerve, or where we can rest and digest. For most of us a massage is a chance to relax, and repair, mentally or physically or both.
I get it is not so easy for many of us to tell someone that we don't like something, especially in a massage, but if you tell me I can adjust accordingly and we can find the Goldilocks Zone for you. When this happens you can relax. Some signs that you are relaxing are when your tummy rumbles known delightfully as a borborygmus.. Your feedback in a massage is the highest compliment you can pay me - it means you feel safe. When you feel safe we can get to work to relieve some of the tensions in your body.
